History:  This is the 7th endorsement Convention in Miami County and the only one of it’s kind in Ohio.  Miami County holds endorsement conventions on Gubernatorial years when there are contested primaries. The convention is modeled after the national convention.  All 82 precincts receive delegate’s dependant on the number of registered Republicans in the precinct.  The convention typically has approximately 400 delegates attend.  In past years the Convention has been known for upset endorsements.  Some examples include: State Sen. Tom VanMeter being endorsed over Congressman Clarence “Bud” Brown for Governor, State Rep. John Boehner being endorsed over former Congressman Tom Kindness and more recently the endorsement of State Sen. Tim Grendell over Auditor of State Betty Montgomery for Attorney General in 2006.

Process:  This years convention has 535 potential delegates.  Delegate counts range from a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 8.  The four county clubs, Woman’s, Men’s YR’s and TARS clubs, receive 10 delegates each along with 4 at-large delegate reserved for the Chair and his committee.

All candidates who attend will have an opportunity to talk to the delegates before the convention begins during the lunch hour.  Each candidate will have a table for literature or give away items.  During the convention each candidate, contested or un-contested will have an opportunity to address the delegates.  Any State or District candidate who attends the convention will have the chance to be endorsed.  Un-contested candidates who attend the event will be endorsed by acclimation.  Statewide candidates who do not attend will not be endorsed and will not be on the county ballot card.

One contested race, to be determined by the Convention Committee, will have a role call vote of each precinct to endorse.  The other contested races are voted on by ballot and announced shortly after the office speaks to the convention.  In the contested races, the candidate who receives a majority of possible votes wins the county endorsement.

The convention is very organized.  Once the committee knows how many candidates are attending they will have a minute-by-minute schedule that is followed religiously.  If a candidate misses their speaking time they are not permitted to speak.  The convention has a reputation of being on time and does not wait for tardy candidates.
