MIKE CRITES: CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

Mike Cries was nominated in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. He served in that position from 1986 to 1993 in the administrations of both President Reagan and President George H.W. Bush.

During his tenure as U.S. Attorney, Crites and his offices successfully investigated, prosecuted and dismantled numerous local, national and international drug organizations; seized and obtained the forfeiture of more than $17 million in illegal drug money and assets; and collected more than $125 million owed to the United States. Additionally, he set up task forces to address health care fraud, insurance and financial fraud, bankruptcy fraud and environmental compliance.

PROSECUTING DRUG DEALERS

Hitting them where they hurt, Mike Cries targeted drug dealers’ financial networks believing “money is the lifeblood of a drug organization – we have to take away the profit motive.” Local law enforcement also benefited from drug seizures using funds for equipment and drug detection materials.

PROSECUTING CORPORATE FRAUD

In 1992, GE agreed to pay $69 million in fines for defrauding the Pentagon and Israeli Defense Ministry.  U.S. Attorney Mike Cries said at the time that it was “the largest prosecution in the government’s foreign military aid program.”

PROSECUTING IRS FRAUD

Mike Crites lead the prosecution of numerous tax fraud cases, including that of former baseball player Pete Rose.

PROSECUTING HEALTH CARE FRAUD

In 1992, Mike Crites helped from a 48-county task force to prosecute health care fraud in government insurance programs.

PROSECUTING ENVIROMENTAL POLLUTERS

In 1999, Mike Crites led an investigation resulting in the conviction of an Air Force Officer who illegally received and disposed of radioactive waste. The Air Force spent more than $1 million on clean up.
